Visit the Tamar Valley

Nestled between Devon and Cornwall, and just a short drive from The Bedford Hotel, the Tamar Valley is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) that offers an idyllic escape for tourists seeking both adventure and tranquility. Rich in history, natural beauty, and a plethora of activities, the Tamar Valley is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Devon and Cornwall.

Explore the Great Outdoors

The Tamar Valley boasts a network of scenic walks suitable for all levels of fitness and experience. Popular routes include the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail and the long distance Tamara coast-to-coast walking route (an epic 87 mile route following the path of the River Tamar from the city of Plymouth to the Tamar's source in North Cornwall). Whether your walk is long or short, you can look forward to breathtaking river views, rolling hills, and diverse wildlife.

For an easy introduction to the Tamar Valley, one of our favourite walks is from the pretty riverside village of Calstock (with its impressive Edwardian railway viaduct, which spans the River Tamar) to Cotehele Quay, famous for its historic quay and tranquil surroundings, offering a picturesque setting for riverside walks and a glimpse into the region's maritime heritage. From Cotehele Quay, there's a rather challenging but short climb up to the National Trust's Cotehele House and Gardens - definitely worth a visit before returning to Calstock along the peaceful woodland path. It's around 3 miles, round-trip.

Cycling Adventures

For cycling enthusiasts, the Tamar Trails Centre provides an excellent starting point. With trails designed for all abilities, from family-friendly paths to challenging routes for experienced cyclists, the area is perfect for exploring on two wheels. If you are touring the area by bike, we have plenty of under-cover cycle storage space at The Bedford Hotel.

Wildlife and Nature Reserves

Nature lovers will find plenty to admire in the Tamar Valley. The Tamar estuary is home to a wide variety of bird species, making it a prime spot for birdwatching. Throughout the Tamar Valley there are endless opportunities to observe the area's  flora and fauna up close.

Dive into History and Culture

Step back in time at Morwellham Quay, a living history museum that offers a glimpse into the region's rich industrial heritage. Visitors can explore the restored Victorian village, take a guided tour of the copper mine, and enjoy interactive exhibits that bring the past to life.

Visit Cotehele

Cotehele House is a beautifully preserved Tudor manor with stunning gardens. This much-loved National Trust property features period furnishings, historic tapestries, and enchanting gardens which wind down towards the Tamar. Every season offers something special at Cotehele - fragrant flower beds in spring and summer, an abundant apple harvest into the autumn, and Cotehele's famous 60-foot Christmas garland of 40,000 dried flowers, which adorns the Great Hall through the festive season.

The Tamar Valley Line

The Tamar Valley Line offers a picturesque rail journey through the scenic landscapes of the Devon and Cornwall border, connecting the bustling maritime city of Plymouth with the quiet Tamar Valley village of Gunnislake. This charming railway line meanders along the banks of the River Tamar, providing breathtaking views of lush countryside, rolling hills, and serene riverside vistas. Travel the section of line between Calstock and Bere Alston, and you'll experience the thrill of traversing the spectacular viaduct across the River Tamar at Calstock. The Tamar Valley Line station closest to Tavistock and The Bedford Hotel is Gunnislake (4 miles by road, and the start and end of the line).

Stay at The Bedford

The Bedford Hotel in the heart of Tavistock is your perfect base for exploring the Tamar Valley. From Tavistock, the Tamar riverside village of Calstock 7 miles (20 minutes drive), and Cotehele House and Gardens are 9 miles (25 minutes).
