Brief History of Goose Fair
Tavistock Goose Fair, one of the oldest and most celebrated traditions in Devon, has a rich history dating back to the early 12th century. The fair originated in 1160 when it was granted a royal charter by King Henry II, allowing the town of Tavistock to hold an annual market for the buying and selling of geese. The fair, which initially focused on the sale of geese for the Christmas market, quickly grew into a much broader event, attracting merchants, traders, and visitors from far and wide.
By the 19th century, the Goose Fair had evolved into a lively celebration, featuring livestock sales, amusement rides, and a wide range of stalls selling goods, food, and entertainment. The event became a focal point for local communities, with people coming together to socialise, conduct business, and enjoy the festivities. Over the years, the fair expanded to include a funfair, games, and various forms of entertainment, and became known for its vibrant atmosphere and unique blend of rural traditions and modern attractions.
Though the original purpose of selling geese has faded over time, Tavistock Goose Fair continues to be an important annual event, preserving a sense of community and celebrating the town's rich heritage. Today, it remains a highlight of the local calendar, attracting thousands of visitors each October.
